Claxton-Hepburn Medical Center Hosts Students
As part of an innovative recruitment effort, Claxton-Hepburn Medical Center is partnering with SUNY Upstate and NAHEC to bring medical students to our area for a six-day immersion experience.  Studies have shown that healthcare providers are greatly influenced by community experiences when choosing where to locate.  The experience gives the students valuable insight into the unique challenges and rewards of providing health care in a rural environment.  Claxton-Hepburn recently hosted its first five students and, over the six-day experience, the students shadowed a variety of Medical Center providers and also immersed themselves into the community through events designed to help them get a feel for life in Ogdensburg.  The students were able to gain an understanding of the local economy, public health issues, recreational offerings, educational resources, social influences, and many of the elements that help define our community.  The students presented their findings to the Medical Center staff at the end of their visit.  Shown at the closing ceremony are Claxton-Hepburn provider, Dr. Dhruv Modi and Dr.  Manasvi Jaitly, who participated in the program,  immersion students Marissa Dale, Eunie Jung, Ernst Fattakhov, Ian Boor and Bronwyn Finney, as well as Jim Regan on hand from Senator Ritchie’s Office and Claxton-Hepburn employees Kim Stiles and Megan Murray, who spearheaded the event.
